Chapter 20: The Patch
Boone called the line to the clubhouse at nine on Thursday.
He didn't ask Amos, and he didn't wait for Sunday.
"It's my right as president," he said in the truck, and his hands were steady on the wheel. "Once."
"I have the recording," I said. "Joelle saying highway. Joelle saying the contract."
"She talks about her father's plans, but nothing on that tape says he ordered anything. He'll call her a hysterical girl and walk."
"So we play it later."
"We play it when it hangs him." He glanced at me. "Not before."
I touched my stomach.
The noon appointment in Hamilton was three hours off, and I had turned off my phone so no one could confirm it for me.
Forty men were waiting in the main room when we walked in.
Amos sat at the head of the table in the council chair, and Joelle sat beside him in the white jacket.
Rafe leaned on the wall by the bar with his arms crossed.
Boone did not take the president's chair.
He stood at the foot of the table, and he put both hands on the wood.
"Somebody booked a procedure for my wife," he said. "In my name, from my old phone, at a clinic in Hamilton. Noon today."
A low sound ran down the table.
"Somebody asked her doctor for her chart with my signature on the fax. And there's a paper with Joelle Dawes's name on it that carves up my father's land if my child is never born."
"Boone," Amos said gently. "You're upset."
"I'm not upset. I'm asking the line a question." Boone looked down the table. "Do you stand with the president's wife and the president's child, or do you not?"
Nobody spoke.
I saw men look at the floor, and at Amos, and at one another.
