Chapter 31: Sunday Table
The first Sunday after we brought the baby home, the road captain showed up at nine in the morning with a ham.
"I wasn't told what you eat," he said at the door.
"Everything," I said. "I'm nursing."
"Good. I brought two."
By noon the ridge house held forty people and two hams, a pot roast, Birdie's pecan pie, and a casserole from a prospect's mother that nobody had the nerve to ask about.
Boone had dragged the old long table out of the clubhouse, and the line had carried it up the hill on their shoulders.
It sat in the front room with all its leaves out, and still some of them ate standing at the counter.
I sat at the head of it with a baby asleep on my arm.
Nobody had warned me what it would be to watch grown men who rode through snow in leather line up to look at someone seven pounds.
"She's got his chin," said one.
"She's got her mother's glare," said another.
"Don't hold her like that," Birdie told a third, and took her out of his hands and laid her against her own shoulder in one motion.
She patted the baby's back with a hand that had raised no children and knew every trick.
"You never had kids, Birdie," the man said.
"I had a diner," Birdie said. "Same thing, more grease."
The table laughed.
It was a real laugh, and I felt it in my ribs.
Boone caught my eye down the length of the table.
He was carrying a stack of plates, and for no reason at all he grinned at me.
I grinned back.
It was the first time in a year I hadn't been braced for the next thing.
