Chapter 8: One Hundred Sixty

The Missoula clinic had a fish tank in the waiting room and a receptionist with a bright, chatty manner.

Boone sat in a plastic chair by the tank with his hands between his knees.

He had not said a word since we left the motel, and I had noticed that he was keeping every one of my terms.

"Gallagher, ten-fifteen," I told the receptionist.

She typed.

"Oh, good. Your husband's assistant called yesterday to confirm. We moved you up to nine-fifty."

I stopped with my hand on the counter.

"My husband doesn't have an assistant."

"A gentleman. Very polite." The receptionist checked the screen. "He said he was calling for Mr. Gallagher and wanted to be sure Mrs. Gallagher was coming in. He didn't leave a name."

Behind me, I heard Boone stand up.

I turned and shook my head once, hard.

He sat back down, but his jaw had gone white at the hinge.

"Nobody's moved my time," I said to her. "Nobody has permission to call about me. If anyone calls again, you tell me. Not him."

"Of course, hon. Is something wrong?"

"Yes," I said. "Write that down."

The doctor had warm hands and a tablet and was very calm.

I lay back on the table with my shirt pulled up and the gel cold on my stomach.

The monitor made a gray fog, and then a small flicker, and then the room filled with a fast, wet, rushing sound.
