Chapter 15: The Sister Who Won't Talk
Imogen's POV
Cade's fever broke at dawn.
I sat on the floor by the bed with my head against the mattress, and his hand was warm in mine for the first time all night.
The old surgeon looked at his eyes, his tongue, and his pulse.
"He'll sulk for three days and eat like a horse for a week," he said. "I'd keep every cup in this room out of his reach."
"I already have."
"Good girl."
I washed my face in the basin, put on the green gown, and went to find my sister.
The Tarrants had the rooms at the end of the east wing, hung with their own tapestries.
Rosalind sat at a window with her sewing in her lap, and her mother's maid stood by the door.
"Leave us," I said to the maid.
"My lady wishes me to stay."
"Your lady's guest wishes you to go. Or I can carry the cup you took to my husband to the Queen's steward, and ask who gave it to you."
The maid went white and left.
Rosalind did not look up.
"Is he alive?" she asked.
"Yes."
"Thank God." Her needle shook. "I told her it was too much."
"You warned me. I know. That's why I'm here and not at the guards' door."
She raised her face.
For the first time since Tarrant Hall, I saw how tired she was.
"Rosalind, sit before the Queen and say what you told that man in the garden. Say you never rode south, you never saw the mill, and the story is mine."
"I can't."
"You can."
"If I say it, my mother says I'm mad with fever and a liar, and the prince hates us both." She put her sewing down very carefully. "And then she names him. He'd be taken before the Queen's justice by noon."
