Chapter 19: The Prince Rides North

Cade's POV

The sergeant found me on the north wall at noon.

"Rider on the king's road, my lord. One horse, one groom, and a crest on the saddlecloth."

"Whose crest?"

"A wolf."

I looked down the long brown slope toward the road.

It was a month since the Queen's feast.

We had been home for three weeks, and I had taken my wife to bed in nearly every room of the keep.

I had not yet had enough.

"Shall I shut the gate?" the sergeant asked.

"Open it."

"My lord."

"Open it, and put the men in the yard. Not with their swords out. Standing."

He grinned and went down the stairs two at a time.

By the time the prince rode in, fifty of the Northmarch's men stood in two lines on the cobbles.

Their arms were crossed and their faces were shut.

He got down from the saddle himself.

He looked thinner than he had in the ballroom.

There was no gold on him anywhere, only a plain riding coat and a sword he had not drawn.

"Lord Garrow," he said.

"Your Highness."

"I am not here with a summons."

"I can see that. You came alone."

"I came with one groom." He looked at the lines of men. "I'm told you are kind to guests."
