Chapter 20: Truth Count, Read Aloud
Miranda's POV
The field house was so quiet I could hear a lantern swinging.
Griffin stood under the screen, holding the microphone with both hands, and the dean put down her cheese.
"I'm Griffin Standridge," he said. "Most of you know that. I'm supposed to get a cup in about twenty minutes, so this is the speech."
A few people laughed, nervously.
"This is the real one," he said. "The woman in that video is Miranda Hathaway, and she isn't typing at air."
He found me at the back of the room, over four hundred heads.
"Since September, I've been able to read what she types," he said. "I don't know how. I don't know why. I can see it floating over her head, and she can see me see it."
Somebody near the front said, "Is this a bit?"
"Yes," Griffin said. "It's the best bit I've ever been in."
The room laughed, properly this time.
"She's funny," he said. "She told me my eyebrows looked like two caterpillars at a funeral. She told me my left shoe was a lawyer. She said I was three raccoons in a trench coat, and the top raccoon was nervous."
The woman from Facilities, beside me, let out a bark of laughter.
"The top raccoon was nervous," Griffin said, "because the whole library was quiet, and she was the loudest thing in it."
I put my hand over my mouth.
"I was scared to talk to her," he said. "So I typed things back. There were grey lines. I wrote them. I wrote all of them."
He pulled out his phone.
"I also kept score. When she sandwiches a true thing between two lies, I count it in my notes."
He turned the screen to the room, though nobody could read it.
"Today, it says nineteen of thirty-one."
"That's a bad batting average!" shouted Beau, from the booth.
