Chapter 23: The Pen He Carried Back

On Wednesday afternoon, I carry the judge's order back to the MercerDx operating floor.

The judge gave Adrian until five o'clock to return every company item in his possession.

He has chosen to do it here, with his counsel and an audience, as if returning things were generosity.

"Place the order beside the dashboard," I tell Petra.

"Then ask him to return everything he carried into the restricted area."

Petra sets the signed court order beside the authorization panel.

The yellow preservation tab faces upward.

Staff can read it without leaning over.

Adrian gathers his coat from the back of a chair.

His right hand closes around his black pen.

He has carried it through the courtroom, the archive room, and this floor.

Petra turns from the dashboard.

"Mr. Mercer, put the company items on the tray."

Adrian pauses with one sleeve of his coat over his arm.

"I'm leaving, Petra. There's no need to turn a departure into a performance."

"You crossed a marked line yesterday after being told not to. The departure already has a performance."

One of the department heads lowers his tablet.

The quality director stops beside the observation line.

Nobody moves toward Adrian.

I keep my attention on the order.

Adrian gives me his public smile.

It is clean, practiced, and badly timed.

"Lena, this is unnecessary. I brought personal items into the area while I was handling an operational emergency."

"Then returning them should take less time than explaining them."

His smile remains in place.

The skin beneath it tightens.

Petra nods toward the evidence tray.

"Phone. Keys. Pen. Any documents. The court order requires preservation of company records and access materials."

"I'm not surrendering personal property to company staff."

"You're not surrendering it to company staff."

Petra points to the clerk standing near the glass partition.

"You're placing it before the court clerk."

The clerk has brought a shallow gray tray and a transparent document sleeve.

A silver courthouse seal crosses the sleeve.

The label beneath it is turned away from us.

Adrian sees the tray.
