Chapter 7: The Bracelet Comes Back to Her

On Monday afternoon, Petra puts a paper cup of black coffee into my hand while Adrian sets a sealed evidence envelope on the MercerDx operations table.

The coffee is hot enough to hurt my fingers through the cardboard.

I keep holding it.

Adrian looks at the staff gathered around the room.

Petra has let him as far as the operations table and no further.

He likes it here because it makes him look busy.

Screens show inventory reports, test batches, and the overnight hospital orders Petra refused to let him cancel.

"We need a clean process for returning personal effects," he says.

"The court is reviewing the identification, but the company cannot pause every time grief becomes complicated."

Petra stands beside me with her red notebook closed under one hand.

"You brought evidence into an operations meeting," she says.

"I brought an item that belongs to Lena's estate."

"We don't have an estate."

His pause is short.

It is still there.

A few people look at the screens.

Nobody looks at Adrian.

They have all learned what happens when he thinks an audience is on his side.

He slides the envelope toward me.

The paper has a county evidence stamp and a handwritten case number.

The seal is already cut.

"I thought you should have this," he says.

"You thought the company should watch you return it."

"Everyone here deserves clarity."

"Everyone here deserves coffee. Petra has handled that better."

Petra's mouth moves once.

It may be amusement.

With Petra, I accept the smallest available diagnosis.

Adrian touches the envelope but does not open it.

His silver watch catches the fluorescent light.

"This was recovered with the unidentified victim's belongings," he says.

"The medical examiner listed it among the personal effects. I recognized it as Lena's."

The room goes still.

The story he has carried from the courthouse into my company.

A dead woman, and a husband who knew exactly what belonged to her.

The envelope lies between us.

I know the handwriting before he removes the paper.

The county inventory is folded around the bracelet.

I saw the list in the emergency file.

Wide gold cuff.

Small engraved L.

Reported on the recovered woman's wrist.

Adrian opens the envelope with a careful thumb.

The bracelet comes out wrapped in clear plastic.

The gold is dull under the office lights.

The engraved letter faces up.

Adrian lifts the evidence bag.
