Chapter 18: Kerri's Version
"Brantley," I said.
"Brantley."
Ike sat up behind me. The bed tipped toward him.
"What's she got on him?" I asked.
"I don't know yet. Norfolk wouldn't say." Darla's gum started again, slow. "But a girl doesn't run to the commonwealth with nothing, sugar. She runs with the best thing in her purse."
"She loved him."
"She loves Kerri Gaskill," Darla said. "He was just the closest thing to her."
When I hung up, Ike was looking at me.
His hair was flat on one side. There was a crease from my pillowcase on his cheek.
"You okay?" he asked.
"I don't know."
"You want me to go get Nettie and make pancakes and not talk?"
"Yes."
He did.
Virginia came out right. Nobody else did.
On Monday, the commonwealth's attorney asked to see me.
Victims have the right to be told things, Darla said. It just usually takes a lawsuit and a fire escape.
His office was on the fifth floor of the courthouse, behind a door I'd drawn people walking out of for nine years.
He was a tired man in shirtsleeves with a framed photo of a fishing boat.
