Chapter 28: The Video
The judge let the silence sit until Kerri heard it.
Then she sat down.
"Ms. Gaskill," he said, "one more outburst and you'll watch the rest of your trial on a television in a holding cell. Do you understand me?"
"Yes, Your Honor."
"Counsel, talk to your client. We'll resume at nine."
Brantley stepped down from the box.
He walked up the aisle alone. He didn't look at Kerri. He didn't look at me.
At the doors he stopped beside the last row, where Ike sat with his arms folded.
Ike didn't move.
Brantley went out.
That night none of us could eat. Ike made grilled cheese anyway, and Darla ate three.
"She just told a judge she did something about it," Darla said, with her mouth full. "In open court. With a reporter typing. I've waited my whole career to watch somebody do that."
At nine the next morning the commonwealth's attorney stood up.
"The commonwealth would like to play Exhibit Forty-one."
He looked at me before he pressed anything.
