Chapter 21: A Chair He Didn't Want

Samson's POV

I knew what I was going to say before I reached the stage.

I had known since the study, when my grandmother held out the seat I'd wanted for six years and I felt nothing in my hands.

Eleanor stood at the microphone with her cane hooked over the lectern.

Four hundred faces looked up at her, and beyond them, down on the floor, Lena stood still in her green dress and watched me climb the steps.

"I name," Eleanor said, "as my successor..."

"Grandmother."

She stopped and turned her head.

"I'm sorry to interrupt."

"You've interrupted me before." Her voice was dry, and every word went out over the room. "Go on."

I took the microphone from its stand.

My mouth was dry, and my hands were not steady, and I did not care who saw.

"I'm Samson Sorrell," I said. "Most of you know that. Some of you have been told I'm the next chief executive of Sorrell Hospitality."

A few people nodded.

"I'm not going to be."

The ballroom stirred.

"My grandmother has made me an offer, and the price of it is this woman." I pointed down into the crowd, at Lena. "I was told to talk her into selling her father's hotels. If I did, the seat was mine."

"Samson," Eleanor said, very low.

"I won't do it. I wouldn't do it if you gave me the whole company with a ribbon on it."
