Chapter 23: Two Houses
"Lena," Becca said, "I'm not going to ask you to forgive me."
The judge let her speak.
Nobody in the courtroom made a sound.
"For eleven years you were the one person who told me the truth. I took everything you gave me, your key and your couch and your Sundays." Her voice cracked and she pushed through it. "I repaid you by sleeping with your husband, and then I sat in your kitchen and cried about a coward who didn't exist."
"Becca."
"Let me finish. If I stop, I won't start again."
I closed my mouth.
"I don't have an excuse. I was scared, and I chose the man who stayed, and I told myself I was doing it for Maisie. I was doing it for me." She turned to the bench. "Your Honor, I'm asking the court to name Samson Sorrell as Maisie's legal father."
Samson made a sound behind me.
"I'm giving up sole custody. I want the order to say joint, with equal time. And I'm refusing any money from Ethan, for her or for me, for the rest of my life." She swallowed. "She'll have what Eleanor gives her, and what her father earns."
"Ms. Dunn," the judge said. "You understand that this costs you."
"I understand."
"You can't take it back."
"I don't want to take it back."
I looked at Becca's hands.
They were white on the table, and they were not shaking anymore.
She had walked into the room carrying the only thing she'd kept for five years, which was being the one who decided, and she had put it down in front of everyone.
