Chapter 23: The Pantry
We went in on the seventieth night, in a crate.
It was the only way left.
Osterman's deputies watched every door but one.
That one was the south dock, where the farm people on the pallet detail came and went with a hand truck.
The man on the radio was a feed-store clerk from Colton.
His wife was in the green tier.
He met us at the foot of the ramp in the dark with a tarp over a pallet.
"Get in," he said.
Bets went into the left crate. I went into the right.
It smelled of cardboard and canned beans.
The pallet jack lifted me, and the floor tilted.
I rode up the long white ramp on my back, looking at the underside of a tarp.
I counted the cracks in the concrete through the slats.
I didn't let myself think about whose ramp it was.
Inside, the air was warm and bright and smelled of floor soap and three thousand people.
The detail rolled us down a service hall past the loading office.
Then they took us through a steel door into a kitchen.
"Concession stand," the clerk whispered, tipping the crate. "Fast."
We climbed out, stiff and gray with dust.
