Chapter 26: The Last Night
The night of the tenth, we lay in the loft office over Hangar Two and argued about buses.
It was a plywood room with a window that looked down on the hangar floor.
There was a couch under a Guard blanket and a space heater.
Below us, in the work light, sat two fighter jets under gray tarps.
The whole base was asleep, three thousand cots' worth of blankets stacked and waiting along the walls.
Everything was ready.
We had gone over every door and every route and every radio call, and now there was nothing left but the hours.
"Eleven buses," he said. "And six trucks. That's one trip each. It won't be enough if the doors slow us."
"It'll be enough."
"You're guessing."
"I've been guessing for eighty-six days," I said. "I'm good at it."
He laughed, low, and we stopped talking.
I'd meant to say something else, a speech I'd built for weeks.
Instead I put my hand on his chest, over the shirt, and felt his heart.
