Chapter 22: The Vote
The lawyer looked at the cameras.
The cameras looked at the lawyer.
The producer, behind the crane, made a little rolling motion with her hand that meant keep going.
"Mrs. Gannett, a garden is highly irregular."
"So was the last wedding in it," Darlene said. "Read the motions."
The lawyer opened his folder on the little white table where the rings should have gone.
"Mrs. Gannett's motion to remove Ramsey Gannett as trustee and chair."
"Withdrawn," Darlene said. "Permanently. Strike it."
Ramsey's hand went still on my back.
"Next."
"The sale of the Pine Hollow parcel on the open market, carried two to one..."
"I move to rescind it," Darlene said. "And I move that the trust convey all one hundred forty acres to the Pine Hollow Elephant Refuge. Not a lease. The land. Forever, for as long as there's an elephant on it."
The garden made a sound.
"Is there a second?" the lawyer said.
"Second," said Ramsey.
His voice cracked on it.
I'd never heard his voice crack.
"The chair isn't recused?" Darlene asked the lawyer, very dry.
