Chapter 8: Kingston
I wrote back before I could think about it.
"Who are you?"
"I ran camera for Tusk & Trail. Eight months. They fired me in March and kept my last eleven weeks of pay."
"Prove it."
A photo came through.
Kyla in a safari jacket, mid-yawn, sitting on a camera case.
Behind her, a hand-painted sign on a wall: LODGE POOL, GUESTS ONLY.
"I'm in Kingston," he wrote. "Tomorrow. The diner on Broadway. Ten a.m. Come alone."
I showed Ramsey.
He read it twice.
"You're not going alone."
"He said alone."
"He can say what he likes. I'll sit at the counter. I'll eat a pancake. I'll be a stranger."
"You're six foot three with an oak tree on your arm. You're the least strange man in Ulster County."
"Then I'll wear long sleeves."
He did.
The diner was all chrome and red vinyl and the smell of bacon.
Ramsey took a stool at the counter with his back to me and ordered pancakes.
The cameraman was already in the back booth.
He was thin, maybe thirty-five, in a hoodie, with a laptop.
"You came," he said.
"You said ten."
He turned the laptop around.
"This is day four of filming," he said. "Episode three. The orphan rescue."
On the screen Dylan knelt in red dirt beside a baby elephant.
He was crying.
The baby leaned on him and Dylan put his cheek against its head.
"That's real," the cameraman said. "The baby's real. The keepers are real. We rented the lodge's whole place for six days and paid the keeper team by the day."
"Six days."
"Six days. Two years of episodes." He tapped a key. "This is day five. The morning after."
A pool, very blue.
