The envelope held ten pages, a stapled photograph, and a cover letter on cream paper.

I read it standing in Ronan's kitchen in his shirt, with the process server's footsteps still going down the stairs.

The first photograph showed a hotel entrance at night.

The woman going in was me, in the green coat I'd worn in August, and the man holding the door was Ronan.

The time stamp was the night of August twenty-fourth.

"That's the hotel's own camera," Ronan said, behind me. "She bought it."

"How do you buy a hotel's camera?"

"Money," he said. "Read the rest."

I turned to the letter.

It was from Carrington Logistics' lawyers on behalf of Marilyn Carrington, and it said, in careful, patient sentences, that the prenuptial agreement applied to both spouses.

It said that if Jessa Winslow had been unfaithful during the marriage, she forfeited the Larkwood house and owed the family four million dollars within ninety days.

It said they had evidence.

I put the page down on the counter and held on to the edge.

"I did it," I said. "I was married. I walked into that hotel."

"You were married to a man who had a woman's earring in his car."

"That doesn't matter on paper."

"It matters to me." Ronan took the letter from my hand and set it face down. "Jessa. Look at me."

I looked.

He was only a foot away, in yesterday's trousers and a bare chest, and his eyes were furious and steady.

"You didn't do anything that night that he hadn't already done to you for months," he said. "Say it back to me."
