Chapter 17: After

A man in the front row was a cardiologist, and he was kneeling beside Marilyn before anyone else moved.

"She's breathing," he said. "Pulse is fast. Someone call an ambulance."

Two hundred people stood in their evening clothes and watched the chair of the Carrington Foundation lie on the stage with her silver skirt spread around her.

Her eyes opened.

She found Landon's face above her, and her hand grabbed his sleeve.

"It's a lie," she said.

"Mother, lie still."

"The test. They bought the lab."

"They didn't," Landon said, very quietly. "I've known the lab director for ten years."

Marilyn's fingers dug into his tuxedo.

Her eyes went past him, and found Kendra standing at the edge of the stage with her hand still on her stomach.

"I chose her for you," Marilyn said. "I chose Kendra. It was supposed to be clean."

Landon went still.

The cardiologist looked up.

"What do you mean, you chose her?" Landon said.

"She needed the position. I needed an heir. You were so slow."

"You hired her."

"I introduced you," Marilyn said, and her voice was a thread. "I made it easy. And she was to give you a boy by spring, and the little wife would sign and go."

The paramedics came through the doors with a stretcher.

They lifted her, and she turned her head on the pillow and found me, standing in the green dress with Ronan's hand in mine.

For a second the old hatred was in her face.

Then it was only fear.

"Take her," Landon said to the paramedics. His voice broke on it. "Please."

They wheeled her out.

The ballroom began to talk, all at once, in a low roar.
