Chapter 21: The Ring in the Drawer

Ronan's POV

I took the stairs down to my own lobby in my shirtsleeves, with my tie still in my pocket and Jessa's perfume on my collar.

Marilyn Carrington sat on the visitors' bench under the Keyes Freight sign, alone.

She wore a camel coat and held a leather handbag on her knees with both hands.

No driver, no lawyer, no wheelchair.

She looked smaller than she had in court.

The receptionist watched us cross the floor.

"Mr. Keyes," Marilyn said.

"Mrs. Carrington."

"I would like ten minutes."

"You can have five."

I took her up in the private elevator, and showed her into the glass office on the thirtieth floor.

She didn't sit.

She looked at the river, and the bridge, and the cranes on the far bank, and at my desk with nothing on it but a phone.

"Your company is smaller than Landon's," she said.

"For now."

"It's better run."

"Four minutes."

She turned.

"I have come to make you an offer," she said. "Please hear all of it."

I waited.

"My late husband left me eleven percent of Carrington Logistics," she said. "With Landon's shares and the board seats I control, you could win your bid on Monday morning. I'll vote them for you."

"In exchange for what?"

"The boys carry the name Carrington. Carrington-Keyes, or Keyes-Carrington, I don't mind which. And I see them, at Christmas, and on their birthdays."

She said it fast, in one breath.

I looked at her for a long time.

"You offered Jessa two million dollars to give them up," I said.

"That was foolish."

"You told her they were property."

"I was frightened."

"Then say it to her, not to me. I'm only the man downstairs."
