Chapter 24: The Garden
The twins were three months old on the morning I opened Marilyn's letter.
We were in the garden at Larkwood, under the oak, with a quilt on the grass.
I had redrawn the beds in May, over the old hedge Landon's father had planted, and the lavender had come in thick and purple along the wall.
It was the first thing in that house I'd ever made.
Ronan sat on the quilt in his shirtsleeves with the gray-eyed twin asleep on his chest.
The other one lay on my lap, fighting his fist.
"Read it," Ronan said.
"I don't want to."
"Then I'll read it."
"No."
I took the cream envelope from the basket and slit it with my thumb.
One page, in the slanted hand.
I read it twice before I looked up.
"What does it say?" he asked.
"She says she was wrong."
"That's all?"
"No." I held it out to him. "She says she wants nothing. No holidays, no birthdays, no names. She says if I ever write, she'll answer, and if I don't she'll understand."
Ronan read it slowly.
When he finished, he folded it along its creases and gave it back.
"Will you write?"
"Maybe. Not this year."
"That's fair."
"It's mine to decide," I said, and was surprised by how steady it sounded.
A car door shut on the street side of the wall.
Ronan lifted his head.
"Right on time."
"He's never been late in his life."
"No," Ronan said. "That was always his best quality."
I stood up with the baby on my shoulder.
Landon came through the side gate in a pale blue shirt, with no tie and no briefcase.
He stopped on the path, ten feet from the quilt, and waited.
He didn't come closer until I nodded.
"Morning," he said.
