Chapter 24: City Hall Counter
We were married for the second time at the same counter in Boston City Hall, on a Saturday in January, with the same clerk at the same window.
She looked at us over her glasses.
"You're the couple from the paper," she said.
"Yes," I said.
"Didn't you get married here already?"
"We're doing it properly this time."
Fiona stood behind us in a green velvet dress that matched mine, with a bouquet of grocery-store tulips she'd stolen from the bar.
She cried so hard that the clerk handed her a box of tissues.
Constance Aldrich sat in the waiting area in her pearls and her navy coat, with a blue plastic pillbox in her handbag, and did not say a word through the whole ceremony.
When it was over she stood, and walked to me, and took my hand.
"Eight and eight," she said.
"Eight and eight."
"Thank you."
I nodded.
I think it was the most she had ever said, and it was enough.
Weston slid a new ring on my finger.
