Chapter 21: Friday
On Friday morning the banker's agent read the notices at the market cross in Larkmoor, with a drummer.
Calista heard the drum from the mill yard, and knew before she heard the words.
She put down the wage book and walked out, and the mill hands followed her, one by one, wiping their hands on their aprons.
By the time she reached the cross, the whole parish stood in the snow.
The agent was a thin man in a fur collar.
He had a roll of paper in his hand and a clerk on either side.
He read it in the flat, carrying voice of someone who has done it before.
"By order of the creditor, in the matter of the Marquis of Voltraine, all notes of hand held against the said Marquis, being three hundred and twenty thousand crowns, are called in full."
A sound went through the crowd.
"And the sum of ninety thousand crowns, lent from the trust of Elowen Tarn, being now in the hands of the creditor by assignment of the trustees, is likewise called."
Calista felt, rather than saw, Elowen go rigid beside her.
She had not planned to bring her.
The girl had walked down alone after breakfast, with her satchel, and stood at Calista's elbow in the crowd.
