Chapter 22: Ottilie's Night
The bailiff unlocked the Swan himself, at six in the evening, with his hat in his hand.
"Seal's broken," he said. "That's for the creditor to explain. I was never here."
"You were never here," Ottilie agreed.
"The lamps want trimming. The third-row seats are damp."
"We'll manage," Ottilie said.
"My wife is coming at eight."
"Then she'll have the best seat in the house."
She stood on the stage of the Gilded Swan in the dying light and smelled dust and greasepaint and old velvet.
Nineteen people came in behind her in their coats.
None of them said anything.
They went to their places and began to light the lamps, one by one, until the gilt on the boxes glittered and the empty stalls looked back at them.
She had come to play one last night.
The Hall, the mill and the Swan were all pledged.
On the twelfth day the building would go to the banker.

She would let it go bright.
A rumour had gone ahead of them through Corbel, the way a rumour does, on a dozen tongues.
The Swan is open tonight, one night, and the actress will play The Glass Orchard.
By seven the street was full.
By eight, the house was packed to the roof, and there were people standing in the aisles.
