Chapter 23: The Third of March
Whit brought the cake himself, and it leaned.
It was a yellow layer cake with chocolate frosting, baked at midnight in his stepfather's kitchen, and the top layer had slid an inch to the left.
"I've never made one before," he said, setting it on Frankie's long table. "There's a lot of frosting."
"That's the best part of any cake," Frankie said, and lit twenty-five candles with a barbecue lighter.
It was the third of March, a Tuesday, and the shack was closed.
Frankie had pushed three tables together under the string lights and cooked for ten people, and she had set four places.
Brendan took the rice and held the bowl across the table without a word.
Whit took it.
Their hands met on the rim, both big, both left, and both of them pulled back too fast.
Whit passed the rice to me, and I passed him the shrimp, and he passed the collards to Brendan.
For a while that was all anybody said.
It was the least important conversation I have ever heard, and I could have wept.
"I've never been on a tugboat," Whit said at last, to his plate.
"I'll take you out on one," said Brendan.
"Okay."
"Okay."
Frankie looked at the ceiling and blew out the candles for him, because he forgot.
We were halfway through the second slice when someone knocked on the screen door.
Lauren stood on the step in a plain gray coat, with no pearls and her hair pinned back anyhow.
She had stepped down from the committee in January, and her mother had not spoken to her since the ball.
"Whit," she said. "I brought you a present. I didn't know if I should come."
