Chapter 20: Weigh-In

The weigh-in was on the Armory stage on Friday at noon, with a scale in the middle and a hundred people watching from folding chairs.

Vince sat in the front row with Lou beside him.

Lou's hands were folded in his lap, and Vince's right hand rested on the back of Lou's chair.

I stood in the wings in my gym sweats.

Cal stood behind me with one hand flat on my back, in front of everybody, and he did not move it.

"One minute," Bea said. "Then you go."

She had a phone on a tripod at the foot of the steps and another one in her hand.

Beside her on a folding table sat a case of water.

Twenty-four bottles, still in their plastic wrap, with a grocery store receipt taped on top.

"Bought at eight this morning," she said. "Cash, in front of the manager. He signed the receipt."

"Bea."

"I filmed him signing it."

"Bea, I love you."

"Don't say that where Cal can hear. He's already jealous of my footwork."

I laughed, and then they called my name.

The girl Vince signed went first.

She stepped onto the scale in a sports bra and spandex, with her chin up and my belt held over her head for the cameras.

One hundred and thirty pounds even.

The commission doctor read it out.

She was a small woman in her fifties, with gray hair cut short and a metal case at her feet, and she had been at every one of my weigh-ins since I was nineteen.
