Chapter 18: The Voicemail
Keith's POV
I didn't let her in the house.
Milo and June were upstairs, and a stranger's voice in the hall was something they would ask about all day.
"The truck," I said.
She followed me down the porch steps to the driveway without a word.
Frost lay on the windshield, and I started the engine for the heater.
She sat in the passenger seat with her phone in both hands and her back very straight.
"I'm not here for him," she said. "I want that understood."
"Then why are you here?"
"Because last night I watched a video of a preschool sidewalk with twenty mothers on it." She turned her head. "And I saw your son run past my husband without slowing down."
I waited.
"I left Preston last spring," she said. "I told people it was because of his schedule."
"It wasn't."
"I found his old phone in a drawer in Bexley. The one from before his restaurant took off. He kept it charged."
"Why would he keep it charged?"
"Because he keeps everything that's about him." Her mouth twisted. "The texts are there, and one is a woman he'd called D. The date is five months before your twins were born. She tells him she's pregnant."
"And he answers, 'handle it.'"
She went still.
"You know about that."
"My investigator found the phone's trail two years ago. He couldn't get to it. He did get as far as your sister."
"My sister told me a man had called." She almost smiled. "I didn't know it was yours."
"Where is it?"
