Chapter 19: The Flower Cooler

Darcy's POV

Keith told me in the kitchen, with the coffee going cold between us.

He told me all of it in order, without once looking away.

Then he said, "It's your voice. It's yours to decide. I'll wait on the porch while you do."

"You don't have to leave."

"I do." He kissed my forehead. "I've decided enough for you."

He went out and shut the door, and I sat there listening to the refrigerator.

When I can't think, I arrange something.

So I opened the shop and arranged a bucket of ranunculus.

She came in at two.

Preston's wife stood in the doorway of Marigold & Main in her gray coat, and she did not say hello.

She looked around at the buckets and the buzzing cooler and the hand-lettered sign about wedding consultations.

"I've bought flowers here," she said. "Twice. Preston said you had a gift."

"I didn't know whose wife you were."

"Neither did I, for a while."

The bell over the door had stopped ringing.

I put down the scissors.

"Keith told me what you have."

"And?"

"Play it."

Her shoulders dropped half an inch.

"You're sure."

"No." I wiped my hands on my apron. "I'm going to hate every second. But it's my voice, and it's the proof he knew, and I'm not going to have you stand up in front of three hundred people and carry my worst night for me."

"Thank you."

"There are conditions."

"Name them."

"My children's names don't get said. Not in the recording, not by you, not by anyone. You cut it before it gets to them." I held her eyes. "The twins stay home, and nobody puts them on a screen. If Preston wants a fight, he fights me."
