Chapter 10: Off Side
Harbor Fields on a Saturday morning was whistles, orange slices and forty parents in folding chairs.
I stood at the edge of the gravel lot with Cal beside me and my hands in my pockets.
"You don't have to go in," he said. "I can do it."
"He's never seen your face."
"He's never seen yours in a place like this, either."
"That's the point," I said.
Out on the grass, a team of eight-year-old girls in yellow shirts was chasing a ball in a pack.
A broad man in a windbreaker jogged along the sideline with a whistle in his mouth, calling "Spread out! Spread out, ladies!"
He was thirty-eight, soft in the middle, with Delphine's pale blond eyebrows.
I walked straight down the sideline until I stood in front of him.
He took the whistle out of his mouth.
"Can I help you?"
"My name is Nora Kittredge," I said. "In March you notarized a deed for my house."
He looked at me, then at the parents, then at the ground, and the last thing his face showed was fear.
"I don't know what you're..."
"I'm the signer," I said. "You stamped a document that says I signed in front of you. I've never met you."
The parents in the nearest row had stopped talking.
A woman in a visor lowered her orange slice.
"This isn't the place," he said, very low.
"It's where you are."
"Mrs. Rowntree, I'm coaching."
"Then answer me quickly, and you can go back to it." I kept my voice calm and level, the way I talk to a room of thirteen-year-olds. "Were you in my kitchen on the Thursday I signed?"
