Chapter 14: The Test
Leah's POV
I saw them from Carrie's window, two men on the sidewalk under the bakery sign.
Levi stood between Derek and the building's front door, with his hands loose at his sides.
Derek was holding a sheet of paper and talking with it.
"Stay up here," Carrie said, already pulling on her sneakers.
"No."
"Leah."
"He came to my sister's door at nine at night," I said. "I'm going down."
Carrie's gray cat, Biscuit, watched me leave from the pillow.
On the sidewalk, the air smelled of yeast and cold pavement.
Derek turned when the door opened, and his face did what it always did, soft and hurt and sure of itself.
"There she is."
"Here I am."
"I looked it up." He held out the paper. "They can do it from your blood. No needle in me, just a swab. There's a lab on Fourth Street, and I booked it for Monday at nine."
It was a printed confirmation with both our names.
"You booked it before you asked me."
"I'm asking now."
"Nine is fine," I said. "I'll be there at ten to."
He had expected a fight, and I watched him not get one.
"That's it?" he said.
"You told a yard full of people it wasn't possible for it to be yours. Now you can find out."
"If it comes back wrong, Leah, you owe every one of them an apology. You owe me one in front of my mother."
"It won't come back wrong."
Carrie snorted behind me.
Derek glanced past me at Levi, and his mouth went thin.
