Chapter 15: What He Owes
On Saturday morning I went downstairs for ginger tea, and Derek was already at the corner table.
The bakery was full.
A line of people in running clothes stood at the counter, and a man with a stroller was arguing happily over a cinnamon roll.
Derek had a cashier's check on the table, a pot of tea and a small blue box.
He stood up when he saw me.
"I got you the ginger," he said. "The kind you drink."
I took the chair across from him, because I wasn't going to be chased out of my sister's bakery.
The woman behind the counter slid a plain scone onto a saucer and set it in front of me without being asked.
"On the house," she said, and gave Derek a long look before she went back to her ovens.
"Thank you," I said to her.
Derek cleared his throat.
"I haven't slept," he said. "My mother hasn't spoken to me since Thursday. She took back her spare key and told me to go sit with what I'd done."
"I'm sorry she's hurt."
"She won't answer my calls. She's having her birthday dinner Thursday night, and she told me I can come as long as I come alone."
He pushed the check across the table.
"That's your card charges," he said. "The deposits, the protection fee, all eleven hundred and forty. Your money's back in the joint account too. Every dollar."
"The court made you do that."
"I'd have done it anyway."
"You moved it on a Sunday and told me about it in front of my coworkers."
