Chapter 11: Into the Rain

"The roof over my head," I said.

My voice carried to the back of the ballroom.

"You had a house, Mom. You had a paid-off house in Warwick and a new refrigerator, and I had a bowl of envelopes."

"You were safe," my mother said. "You had a school for Maisie and a name."

"I had a name you rented out."

Someone in the crowd made a low sound of disgust.

My mother's eyes flicked around the ballroom, at two hundred faces and at least thirty raised phones.

For the first time, she looked afraid.

"I did what I thought was best," she said.

"You told me to be grateful."

"I told you to be patient."

"You told me to endure it, every Wednesday, for six years." My throat burned. "He took my money, and you took his."

I turned to Marcy.

Her curls had come loose.

Her lipstick was a red line on a white face.

"Roz, please," she said. "It wasn't like that."

"What was it like?"

"My café lease. He said he'd cancel it. He said I'd lose everything if I didn't. I only had to keep you calm." She began to cry. "I never said anything that wasn't true. I did think he'd trust you again."

"You liked the clip," I said.

She flinched.

"You pressed the heart on a video of my face while I opened a card that said *Learn to budget*, and then you texted him from my mother's kitchen to tell him where I was going."

"I was scared."

"So was I. For six years. And you were paid for it."

I took a breath.

"I won't scream at you," I said. "I just want you both to leave this house and not call me again."

The room was so quiet that I heard Marcy's heels as she backed toward the door.

My mother did not move.

"Rosalind," she said. "Maisie is my granddaughter."
