Chapter 19: The Board
"A house nobody's moving into," I told Maisie in the pick-up line.
She accepted it, because she was nine and wanted a snack.
I did not accept it at all.
On Friday morning, a woman I had never met called my cell phone.
"Mrs. Carraway, I chair the board of Carraway Marine. We saw the video from the party. We would like you to come to an emergency session at ten."
"Why me?"
"Because the entries in that ledger are paid from our books," she said. "And I understand you used to read ledgers for a living."
Tobias drove.
The company's offices were a glass building on Newport harbor with a fleet of white yachts moored at the pier.
I had been in it twice in six years, both times for photographs.
Today the receptionist stood when she saw me.
The boardroom had a table for fourteen.
Seven people sat at it.
The chair, a woman with silver hair and a silver pen, pointed me to the seat at the foot.
"Mr. Carraway has been told the meeting is about the quarterly," she said. "He doesn't know you're here."
"Good."
She slid a stack of printouts across to me.
"Please."
I read them the way I had read ten thousand bank files.
I started at the wedding month and went down the column with my finger.
The company kept a line called *Dock Reserve,* a fund for repairs to the pier.
Every month for the first two years, the line showed the same withdrawal.
Seven thousand five hundred dollars.
"Four thousand and three thousand five hundred," I said. "That's the two checks in the safe ledger. D.T. for my mother. M.L. for my friend. Both together, on the first of every month."
"Reserve funds are used for the pier," a man at the table said.
