Chapter 32: The Empty Bowl
I put myself between my daughter and the end of the tunnel.
Philip did not come any closer.
He stood with his hands at his sides, in front of a wall of blue water, and he looked tired.
"I'm not here to speak to her," he said, across thirty feet. "I wanted to see her."
"You're barred from the school trip."
"I bought a ticket like anyone."
"Leave."
"Is she well?"
"She's nine and she's eating a cookie."
"I see that." His mouth moved. "Friday, Rosalind."
He turned and walked out through the gift shop.
Maisie, behind me, had seen all of it.
"Was that him?"
"Yes."
"He looks smaller without the suit."
"He's wearing the suit."
"He looks smaller anyway," said Maisie, and went back to the sharks.
Friday at ten, the Carraway house on the water stood open, and every shutter had been pushed back.
I had thought it would look haunted.
It looked like a very large, very quiet house that someone had finally aired out.
The housekeeper had come with us, and she walked in first and touched the doorframe.
Eleven years she had worked here.
Tobias carried the folder.
The board chair was already in the dining room with the court's new trustee, a thin gray man with a calculator, and Philip's attorney sat at the far end of the table with his silver pen laid down.
Philip stood by the window.
He wore a charcoal suit.
On the long walnut table lay a deed, and beside it, polished and heavy, stood the silver bowl.
