Chapter 9: Sam's POV

Sam's POV

I should have knocked three weeks ago.

I thought about it every night on my porch, with a mug going cold on the railing and 118 Linden Court lit up across the street.

It had been a Thursday.

I had come off a twenty-four-hour shift and seen a moving truck backed up to Jo Abernathy's driveway.

A blonde woman in a robe had stood in the doorway directing two men with boxes.

I knew Jo to wave at.

I knew her husband to nod at.

I did not know the blonde woman.

I told myself it was family.

I told myself a woman who lets relatives move in knows about it.

Then I went inside and slept for nine hours.

Four days later I watched the same woman carry a laundry basket to the mailbox and say to the neighbor, "Oh, Jo's away for work. It's been hard on the marriage."

I had stood at my own mailbox with a handful of flyers and said nothing.

That's the part I don't like looking at.

I'm thirty-five.

My ex-wife left because I never said what I was thinking until it was too late to matter.

I had not changed much.

Then Jo's car sat at the end of the street with its engine off.

I walked over with two coffees.

She asked me, "Did you know?"

I said, "Know what?" and let her ask the questions instead.

I still hadn't told her about the truck.

I'd decided to tell her once I had something to give her with it.

That was a coward's reason, and I knew it.

I also knew the log.

Slot 3, armed at 2:41, disarmed at 3:12, on Tuesday morning.

So on Wednesday night I sat in the dark on my porch in a jacket with my phone on my knee, waiting to see if she would do it again.
