Chapter 5: The Sponsor Visit

The mattress company's rep arrived at ten on Wednesday with a tablet, a photographer and a box of throw pillows.

I had taken the morning off to be there.

She was in her forties, brisk and friendly, and she shook my hand last, after everyone else's.

"So you're Brooke," she said. "The heart of the Prescott Table."

Colby slid an arm around my shoulders and I let him, for the moment.

"She's shy on camera," he said.

The photographer set up a staged breakfast in the dining room.

Tori fixed the napkins, and Brent wore a clean flannel shirt.

Kendra came down the stairs in a cream sweater with her hair freshly brushed, carrying the orange cat.

"Do we want the cat in the first shot?" Tori asked.

"The cat is the story," Colby said.

I held a tissue to my nose.

The rep sat across from me and opened her tablet.

"We loved the livestream from your housewarming," she said. "The slogan, the clues, the surprise. Can you tell me how the family game started, Brooke?"

Everyone at the table looked at me.

Colby's hand tightened on my shoulder. It was a warning.

"I can show you," I said.

I took out my phone and put it on the table between us.

The first screenshot was the one from Table Four. Brent's message was there in plain text: "Still at the harbor. Keep quiet till she gives up."

Under it was Colby's laughing face.

"That's from a joke chat," Colby said quickly.

"The second one is my playlist," I said.

I opened it. Three songs had been added by me, and three had been deleted that same night.
