Ross's POV
I didn't sleep after I left the apartment above the laundromat.
I sat at my kitchen table at two in the morning with Derek Kane's personnel file open in front of me.
HR keeps everything, if you ask the right person at the wrong hour.
The first page was his nomination form for the Family First Award.
It listed his wife, Holly, and his daughter, June, and under "family activities" he had written: Sundays are sacred.
I had read that line three weeks ago and thought it was a good line.
The second page was a memo to HR dated a month back.
My wife and I are separating, it said. She has moved out. Please keep this confidential until after the award. My daughter will attend with her mother.

He had set it up so that if Holly walked into that gym with June, it would look like a quiet, civilized family, and I would applaud a man with a nice divorce.
The third page was his emergency contact sheet.
He had changed it in August.
Emergency contact: Gwen Tilley, relationship, family friend.
I went back to the card statement and put it next to the street map on my laptop.
Every pancake house, every zoo, every trampoline park he had charged was within a fifteen-minute drive of Linden Street.
None of them were within a fifteen-minute drive of Beech Street, where he lived with his wife.
He hadn't been taking his daughter out.
He had been taking her somewhere.
I thought about the little girl at the school gate.
