Chapter 11: The Surprise
Holly's POV
"I'm not supposed to say that," June whispered.
She had put her fork down and pressed both hands over her mouth.
Jill, at the end of the table with her tea, had stopped moving.
I turned off the burner.
I came around the counter, knelt beside June's chair and kept my voice as soft as I could.
"You're not in trouble," I said. "Not even a little. Not ever for telling me something."
"I didn't tell. I only said pancakes."
"You said pancakes. That's all right."
"It's a secret." Her chin started to shake. "It's your surprise, Mommy, and I wasn't supposed to ruin it."
"What surprise?"
She slid off the chair and ran to the couch.
She came back dragging her backpack by one strap.
It was heavier than it looked, and it hit the floor with a thump.
She unzipped it with both hands.
Out came the brown bear, and then a flat blue folder that had been bent at the corners from being carried everywhere.
She held it out to me with her whole body tight.
"They're for you," she said. "For your birthday. I made a book."
I opened it on the table.
The first drawing was a pancake house.
A stack of pancakes with a cherry on top. A man with yellow hair holding a coffee cup. A small girl in a booth. A woman in an apron beside a little boy.
In the corner, in a six-year-old's careful printing, was a date.
I turned the page.
A zoo. A giraffe, and a man and a woman and two children standing in front of it, holding hands.
