He Gave Our Helicopter Away, So I Stopped Waiting to Be Rescued novel · Chapter 16 of 24

Chapter 16: No

Lena's POV

My husband was on his knees on the dock, and every fisherman on the quay had stopped coiling rope to watch.

"Lena," Damon said. "Please."

I stopped ten feet away.

Fraser stood beside me, a pace back, with his hands loose and his face careful.

I knew what he was doing.

He was leaving the floor to me.

"Get up," I said.

"I'll get up when you've heard me."

"Then talk."

Damon swallowed.

His eyes were red, and he'd cut himself shaving, a small dark nick under his jaw.

"I was wrong," he said. "I'm not going to say it was complicated. I put another woman on that helicopter and left you in a storm, and then I lied to your face on the phone."

"Yes."

"I'll sign my shares to you. All of it, fifty-five percent. You can run the company, you can sell it, you can burn it."

"Why would I want it burned?"

"I don't know. Whatever you want." His voice broke. "I'll go. I'll go to the mainland and never set foot here. I'll see Tilda when you say."

"Is that all?"

"Come home," he said. "Just come home. We can fix the house. I'll be a different man. Six years, Lena. You were the best thing I ever did."

I looked at him for a long time.

Six years of dinners and photographs and the story about the open water.

I could remember loving him, and remembering it didn't hurt, which surprised me.

"You're asking me in front of everyone," I said.

"I want everyone to hear."

"You want them to see me say yes. If I say no here, I look cruel. You know that, Damon, because you've always known where the crowd was standing."
