Chapter 9: The Channel

Lena's POV

The pilot at the end of the dock looked tense and cornered, waiting for trouble.

He stood up fast when I came down the boards, and Fraser took a half step to the side, so that his shoulder blocked my view of the man's pocket.

I noticed that. I noticed everything this morning.

"Mrs. Ostby," the pilot said.

"You flew past me last night."

"Yes, ma'am."

"Are you unwell?"

"I'm going to the clinic," he said. "Now. I'm not feeling right."

He went past me up the dock at a speed that was almost running, and I let him.

Then I turned to Fraser, and I held out my hand.

"Give me whatever's in your pocket."

"It's nothing."

"You said you don't tell the polite lies."

He winced, and the wince gave him away more than the lie had.

"That's a fair hit," he said.

"I thought so."

He took out his phone, thumbed the screen, and held it out to me, and I took it with my bandaged hand.

I listened to it standing in the sun, with the lagoon sloshing under the planks.

Corinna's voice came out of it low and even, ordering the hold and telling him to keep it from me.

I played it a second time with my eyes closed.

I knew the voice. It had told me which paint to choose for the nursery, and that I looked radiant in a green dress.

"Lena stays where she is," I said.

"I'm sorry."

"She was on that call before Damon called me. She planned it."

"Or he did, and she only carried it."

"No." I opened my eyes. "He told me to my face last night that the contractor was coming. He sounded completely convinced of it. She's the one who wrote the story and gave it to us both."

Fraser did not argue.

I handed the phone back, and we stood side by side looking at the water.
