Chapter 22: Her Own Screen
Janie's POV
The glass booth at the top of the Stampede's stadium smelled of coffee and old cables.
Lyle's friend sat in a rolling chair with three screens and a sandwich.
He had a gray crew cut like Lyle's and a pair of reading glasses on a cord.
"I've run this board for twenty-six years," he said. "I've never once been asked to play a car."
"It's a good car," Lyle said.
Zach stood behind me with Gus in the sling, and he had his hand on my back where my rib was, lightly.
Below us the Stampede was winning.
It was the second quarter, and Chase had thrown for two scores, and the whole stadium was in his color.
In the owner's box at the fifty, Lacey sat in a cream coat with a blanket over her knees and a steaming mug in her hand.
Beside her sat Franklin, looking at the field.
"When you're ready, ma'am," Lyle's friend said.
"I'm ready."
"There's an ad break in half a minute."
"We'll take it," I said.
The ad break came, and a man on the field in a vest held up a hand.
Lyle's friend pressed one key.
The big screen, thirty feet high, went black.
Then it said, in the font of a label maker:
EXHIBIT 1.
The crowd laughed, because they thought it was an ad.
A back seat appeared on the screen, with clear plastic over every inch of it and a woman in a cream coat sitting in the middle.
"I could have waited," Lacey said, in a voice that filled the stadium. "But I didn't want you in the hospital, away from the cameras, telling a nurse."
The crowd stopped laughing.
