Chapter 23: Benched

Franklin McClintock took the box microphone from its stand.

His face was thirty feet high on the screen, and it was perfectly calm.

"This is Franklin McClintock," he said. "I own this team."

Fifty thousand people went silent.

"I heard enough from the car," he said. "I'm going to say three things and then I'm going to sit down."

He turned his head toward the field.

"One. Number eleven is benched. Coach, you have the headset. Take him off."

On the field, Chase turned slowly toward the sideline.

The coach was standing there with his arms crossed and did not look surprised.

"Two," Franklin said. "My daughter is no longer welcome in this box or in this building."

Lacey made a small, high sound beside him.

"Three. Clause 31 is a contract my team signed off on, and I honor my contracts. Mr. Holloway will read it into the record, now, before the next down."

Lyle's friend whistled softly.

"He's good," he said.

A man in a vest ran onto the field with a microphone and put it into Chase's hand.

Chase held it in two fingers.

"I..." he said, and his voice came off every wall of the stadium. "I announced my engagement before my divorce was final. To Jane Holloway."

"Hendry," I said into my own microphone, over every speaker in the place.

He closed his eyes.

"Janie Hendry," he said. "I'm sorry. I was wrong. She was a good wife."
