Chapter 11: The Slicker
The cemetery gate at Tarpon Springs was already open at six, and the priest was standing inside it in a black cassock with a flashlight.
Leo had called him.
He was an old man with a white beard, bent at the shoulders, who had married us in this parish and buried my father from it.
He looked at me for a long time without speaking.
Then he made the sign of the cross over me, right to left.
"Daphne," he said, in Greek.
"They told me you were dead."
"I know, Father," I said.
"I said the prayers."
I nodded.
"God forgive me," he said.
"I didn't believe it for one day, and I said nothing.
"Come."
Anders stayed in the car at the gate.
I had asked him to.
He'd looked at me, and nodded, and put his hand flat on the dashboard where I could see it.
Leo walked ahead of us up the shell path, in the gray dawn, past the Greek names cut in granite, with the sun not yet over the water.
The wind had picked up.
