Chapter 12: Skylar's Folder
"You're not going alone," Declan said.
"She said alone."
"She also dropped a key at a diner and told you to come to a train station at night."
"She's pregnant, Declan."
"That doesn't make her trustworthy. It makes her pregnant."
"She texted me happy anniversary on the worst night of my life, and then she came to the diner and told me to my face. I think she's the only one who has told me the truth this week."
"That's a low bar."
"It's the one I have."
He ran a hand over his face.
"Fine," he said. "I'll be in the car on Vanderbilt. If you aren't out in twenty minutes I'm coming in."
"And do what?"
"Stand there. Look intimidating."
"You're a singer."
"I'm a tall singer."
I laughed, and he touched my chin with two fingers before he opened the car door for me.
At ten o'clock Grand Central was almost empty.
A man was mopping the marble under the big clock, and a few late commuters hurried toward the shuttle.
Locker 214 was on the lower level, behind the dining concourse, in a bank of tall steel doors.
Skylar was already standing beside it.
She wore a gray hoodie with the hood up, and she had no makeup on, and her hands were shoved deep in the pocket of the hoodie.
"You came," she said.
"You asked."
"I didn't think you would."
"You were right to be careful," I said. "I'm not here to hurt you."
"I know." Her voice shook. "That's the problem."
She nodded at the door.
I put the key in the lock, and it turned.
Inside was a gym bag, and inside the gym bag was a thick brown accordion folder.
I set it on the nearest bench and opened it.
