Chapter 13: Ruling
They walked out together, Noah's hand locked around Raven's wrist, past the stretcher and the folded blanket to centre court.
Eleven thousand people sat down at once.
The dean stood at the microphone in her reading glasses, with a three-page booklet in her hand.
Thompson sat on the bench with a towel over his shoulders and his jacket zipped to his chin, and a trainer stood beside him.
"I read the Alpha Athletics Code this week," the dean said. "All of it. It took four minutes."
Somebody in the top row laughed.
"Section 4.1 concerns footwear. No section of it mentions alphas, omegas, rosters or secondary gender."
"Footwear!" shouted the gym, happily.
"Thank you," said the dean. "The alpha roster is a line on a tryout form that the basketball team printed itself. The university never approved it and will not enforce it. As of tonight it is struck."
The noise that came down from the stands shook the banner over the far basket.
Raven's mother was on her feet with her new sign above her head.
Benjamin stood beside her, holding the laminated one, nodding slowly, as if a motion had passed.
"Every team on this campus is open to every student who can play," the dean went on. "Omegas included. Tryouts begin Monday."
She turned her head.
"Mr. Thompson, please stand."
Thompson stood up.
The towel slid off his shoulders, and he left it on the floor.
"On Wednesday you read a student's private medical information into a microphone," the dean said. "You tore a medical patch off his neck during play. You are suspended from every athletic program for the rest of the year. On Monday you will apologize to this campus in person."
