Chapter 14: Apology
On Monday afternoon the gym was full again, and nobody had come for a game.
Thompson stood at centre court in a plain grey sweatshirt with the hood down, holding three index cards.
Raven stood on his left and Noah on his right.
Nobody had asked them to hold anything, so they held each other's sleeves.
"I'm going to read this off cards," said Thompson into the mic. "I wrote it five times, and Noah crossed out four."
A few people laughed, and he waited for them to finish.
"Last week I read a private medical fact about a teammate into this microphone. Then I tore a patch off his neck while he was playing."
His thumb was white on the card.
"I did it to protect myself. That's the truth, and it's a bad reason, and the person I did it to has been kinder to me than I earned."
Raven kept his eyes on the far basket and said nothing.
"Nobody gets to say it for someone else," Thompson said. "He told me that, on this floor, with my face in his arm. I'm sorry, Raven. I'm sorry to everyone who was watching."
He lowered the cards.
"That's all of it."
Thompson stepped back from the mic, and the gym clapped, slowly at first.
Noah's fingers tightened on Raven's sleeve, and Raven felt it all the way up his arm.
Afterwards Thompson stood in the tunnel with the cards crushed in his fist.
"Did I say too much?" he asked.
"You said exactly what was yours," said Noah.
Thompson nodded, put his hood up, and walked away down the corridor with his orange bottle in his hand.
