Chapter 16: Timeout
The national semifinal was played in a stadium with twenty thousand seats, and Raven's team had three omegas on the floor.
They were up against the defending champions, an all-alpha team in navy jerseys, and the navy bench had sneered at the lucky stickers in warmups.
Raven had stopped caring about that two weeks ago.
What he cared about was the freshman guard.
The freshman was the boy who had written Omega on the tryout sheet in shaking capitals, and he was playing the game of his life.
With six minutes left in the second half, Raven's team was down by two.
The freshman drove the lane, and Raven saw him falter.
It was a small stumble, and it would have been invisible to anyone who had not spent three years hiding the same thing.
The boy's hand went up to the side of his neck, where the patch was.
It had come halfway off, and the sweet smell was already spreading across the baseline.
Raven felt it hit the back of his throat.
The navy forward guarding the freshman felt it too, and Raven watched his shoulders square and his nostrils flare.
The referee, ten feet away, saw nothing at all.
The freshman looked across the court at Raven, wide-eyed.
"I'm fine," he mouthed. "I'm fine, I can play."
Raven knew every inch of that face.
He had worn it for three years.
His father had taught him a rule at nine years old, at a dinner table, when a vice president asked for a recess in the middle of a bad argument and lost a merger over it.
