Chapter 7: Then Only Your Son-in-Law

At breakfast on Monday, Raven's father had cooked for one person, and it was not Raven.

There was a plate of eggs cut into soldiers at Noah's place, and a bowl of tomato soup beside it, because Noah had said soup was his favourite thing and Benjamin had been up since five.

"Is that for breakfast?" Raven said.

"It's for whenever he wants it," said Benjamin, and updated the laminated schedule with a dry-erase pen.

Raven's name had been moved to the bottom of it.

Gracy came in from the hall with something folded over her arm.

"I hope I guessed right," she said, and held it up.

It was a cream cable-knit sweater, and it was Noah's exact size.

"When did you measure?" Noah said.

"You were asleep," Gracy said brightly. "It took ten minutes. You didn't stir."

Noah held the sleeve against his chest and did not seem able to say anything.

"I've been knitting since six this morning," his mother added. "I got to the elbow by dawn."

"Mom," said Raven. "You haven't knitted me a sweater since I was fourteen."

"You grew too fast."

"I'm six foot two. I grew once."

"Noah's too thin to grow," said Gracy, and that settled it.

Raven put his fork down.

"Right. Everyone, listen up."

Three people looked at him.

"He's my boyfriend," Raven said. "Mine. I brought him home. You can feed him and knit for him and measure him in his sleep, but he's mine, and then only your son-in-law."

There was a pause.

"Son-in-law," Benjamin said, and set down his pen, with an expression of enormous private joy.

"That's not what I meant," said Raven.

"It's a very good plan," said Gracy.

"I haven't said yes to anything," Noah said, but he was smiling into the sweater.
