Chapter 20: What Margo Said
The gray-haired board member walked to the microphone and took it out of my hand, politely.
"Sir," he said to the old man. "I'd like to ask you one question in front of the people who trust your name."
"Did you know?"
The old man's face was stone.
"Of what?"
"Of the gate. The pills. The woman who sat in your guest house for fifteen months while you lectured us on family values at every annual meeting."
"I knew nothing until a month ago."
"Father," Margo said.
Her voice came out small and cracked.
Everyone turned.
She had walked into the middle of the floor, and her gown looked suddenly too big on her.
Her hands were clenched at her sides.
"Father, tell them," she said. "Tell them what you said when you found out about the first girl."
The old man's eyes went to her, slowly.
"Margo."
"You said 'handle it,'" said Margo.
The ballroom was so quiet I heard a fork land on a plate.
"You said it twice. You said it at dinner the night she came to the house. You said: handle the girl. Handle the wife. Don't let it reach the papers."
"I have handled things for this family since I was nineteen years old."
"I was the one who kept the gate. I was the one who sat in that room and watched her swallow."
"Because you wanted me to be useful."
"Margo," said Tate, from the head table. "Shut up. Shut up, shut up."
"You told me to," she said, and her voice rose. "You told me, Father. And not once did you say, 'Thank you.'"
The old man stood.
He did it slowly, with both hands on the cane.
"You will stop this," he said.
"Why?" Margo said. "It's true."
She was crying now, with her mouth open, and it was the ugliest thing I had ever seen on her.
It was also the first honest thing.
