Chapter 14: At Your Door

By noon the whole floor of Calloway Partners had stopped working.

Nine people stood along the glass wall of the open office, and not one of them would look at me directly.

A young account lead came to my door with a printout.

"The regional bank paused our proposal," she said. "They said until the Stroud matter is clear."

"There is no Stroud matter," I said. "I took nothing."

"I believe you," she said, and she looked miserable. "But they don't know you."

Jonah stood behind her in the corridor with his jaw set.

"Nobody touches a laptop," he said to the floor. "Nobody forwards that article. Ms. Garrity's work is on our server, and anyone who wants to check it can come see me."

Some of them nodded.

Two of them went back to their desks looking relieved, and one of them did not.

At seven, when the floor had emptied, I stood in his office with my bag on my shoulder.

"I'm going to Wacker Drive," I said. "I'm going to say it to his face."

"Our lawyer says you shouldn't speak to him."

"Your lawyer isn't the one called a thief on three websites."

"Nell, the lawyer is right. If you go in angry, he gets it on camera."

"He gets everything on camera." I put the bag down. "He gets the people who clap and the people who stay quiet, and then he gets to be the one who calmly explains it. I've watched him do it for twelve years."

"Then let someone else explain it first."

"Like who? You?"

"If that's what it takes."

"You wrote me three letters and then you waited," I said. "That's how you do things. You decide, you wait, you let it work out."
