Chapter 20: Last Shares

Lachlan's POV

I walked the four miles from the pilot dock to Gaston Street because I did not trust myself in a car.

The compass was gone from my pocket.

My son had fallen asleep with it against his cheek in the back of Verity's station wagon.

Ione had looked at me over his head and said nothing.

I had not asked for it back.

I rang the bell of the house I had grown up in.

The housekeeper let me in, and I told her not to announce me.

My mother sat in my father's study with a book open on her knee.

She did not look up.

"You've seen the boy," she said.

"Yes."

"Then you know I'm right to want him."

"I know you want him," I said. "I'm not sure it's the same thing."

I had brought the trust's attorney with me, a quiet man in his sixties who had been my father's friend.
